Understanding the parts of speech is a core part of learning the writing craft. Here is a handy chart from @BenisonMrs.

The chart format makes the parts of speech easy to follow and is a ready reference. Certainly there are other parts of speech to understand, but the chart is a good layout of the basics.

I personally like this approach for pedagogy because it’s very structured. Here are a few ideas for using this in teaching:

  • Print it out and display it in the classroom.
  • Walk students through the chart beginning with nouns and verbs so they understand what complete sentences look like. Everything hangs on this understanding.
  • Work in modifiers like adjectives and adverbs to show them how to add details.
  • In all this, make sure to cover how punctuation makes it all hang together.
