While automation will increasingly rule our lives (as if it doesn’t already), I predict that advocating for higher minimum wage levels will accelerate the use of automation. An article about the Department of Defense’s contract to automate some dining facility (it’ll always be “mess hall” to this veteran!) functions. Since food service includes many workers who draw minimum wage, I predict organizations will automate more functions to eliminate the labor cost.

Main point: “California’s Travis Air Force Base’s Monarch dining facility has become the first in the Department of Defense to acquire an automated food preparation robot called ‘Alfred.'”

More about it:

  • The robot “uses hygienic robot arms to automate food preparation activities.”
  • Will the robot “be able to provide the reduction in food waste, improvements in sanitation and manning benefits as projected?” Note the phrase, “manning benefits.”

Think about it:

  • The so-called knowledge professions aren’t safe from automation either. A quick Internet search will turn up articles about robot school teachers, news articles written by AI, illnesses diagnosed by AI, etc.
  • Young people are well-advised to take the challenging courses to prepare themselves to adapt and thrive.
