By now, college football fans are well into bowl season, and the question arises: after getting past the playoffs and New Year’s bowls, what difference do the other bowls make? One writer derides the other bowls, saying they’re meaningless. That may be so, but I’d like to offer a small counterpoint.
I get the logic but would offer a point in favor of bowl games that’s more about fan servicing.
- Since they’re played in different parts of the country, they’re opportunities for fans to see their teams they otherwise might not be able to see during the season.•
- The bowls are also a chance for fans to do family travel to cities they might not normally visit. Disney World might be everyone’s default destination, but some of the cities have great aquariums, museums, festivals, shows, night life, etc. that fans might normally not experience because of going to the more established vacation destinations.
- My college classmates use the bowl games as reunion opportunities. The lower level bowls can be affordable, and we use the opportunities to reconnect with each other.
Maybe not the strongest of arguments, but those bowl games do offer additional fun vacation opportunities as well as one more opportunity to consume overpriced stadium food that’s bad for your health!
